Roberta Hilbrandt Scholarship
![]()
On July 3, 2009 we lost a dear friend and enthusiastic student, Roberta Hilbrandt, after a courageous battle with cancer. Roberta started at the Academy in the fall of 2005 when she attended her first fine binding class with Monique Lallier. She decided to study conservation as well and signed up for Don Etherington’s Treatments course the following spring. Her beautiful smile lit up the studio, and her joyful laugh will always be remembered. Roberta loved the American Academy of Bookbinding and had a very deep affection for her teachers and the many friends she met through her classes.
It is her Husband’s (Bill’s) wish that Roberta be remembered for her love of the book arts and her love of lifelong learning. To support this wish and in recognition of the special place Roberta holds in their hearts, numerous friends and acquaintances have contributed to the Roberta Hilbrandt Scholarship Fund. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a student who is interested in the long-term study of bookbinding who might be otherwise financially limited from doing so.
We are excited to offer one annual award of $1500 to cover the tuition for a two-week class at the American Academy of Bookbinding in the name of Roberta Hilbrandt. In this way Roberta’s spirit will live on, and her memory will benefit another enthusiastic student.
In 2010, we awarded our first scholarship to Kayle Sykes of Montreal, Canada. Sialia Rieke of Santa Fe, New Mexico was our 2011 recipient. Congratulations!
A thousand “Thank yous” go out to the friends and family of Roberta Hilbrandt who contributed to this fund. What a wonderful way to honor Roberta!
