financial aid

AAB has three kinds of financial aid: TUITION ASSISTANCE, HOUSING AND MATERIALS, and the ROBERTA HILBRANDT SCHOLARSHIP. There are three different application processes, one for each. Next year we will have just one application process, but since some of the programs were added mid-year, we were unable to combine the applications.

Please review all categories. You may apply for all three categories if you would like. Direct all questions to Judy Kohin, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), 970-728-8649

3. Roberta Hilbrandt Scholarship: TUITION

On July 3, 2009 we lost a dear friend and enthusiastic student, Roberta Hilbrandt, after a courageous battle with cancer. Roberta started at the Academy in the fall of 2005 when she attended her first fine binding class with Monique Lallier. She decided to study conservation as well and signed up for Don Etherington’s Treatments course the following spring. She was one of a handful of students pursuing both tracts of study, and because of this many students got to know her. Her beautiful smile lit up the studio, and her joyful laugh will always be remembered. Roberta loved the American Academy of Bookbinding and had a very deep affection for her teachers and the many friends she met through her classes. In April 2009, Roberta and her friend Lisa Isley spent a wonderful week bookbinding at Don and Monique’s studio in Summerfield, North Carolina.

It is her Husband’s (Bill’s) wish that Roberta be remembered for her love of the book arts and that others may pursue Roberta’s love of lifelong learning. In support of this wish and in recognition of the special place Roberta holds in their hearts, numerous friends and acquaintances have contributed to the Roberta Hilbrandt Scholarship Fund. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a student who is interested in the long-term study of bookbinding but who might be otherwise financially limited from doing so.

We are excited to offer one annual award of $1500 to cover the tuition for a two-week class at the American Academy of Bookbinding in the name of Roberta Hilbrandt. In this way Roberta’s spirit will live on, and her memory will benefit another enthusiastic student.

A thousand “Thank yous” to the friends and family of Roberta Hilbrandt who contributed to this fund. What a wonderful way to honor Roberta!
