Intermediate/Advanced Fine Binding

May 3-14 2010

Students will complete two full-leather bindings in this class. A range of fine binding techniques will be learned including laced-in boards, French style embroidery end-bands, leather hinges, end papers, sunken suede leather doublures and decorated paper or leather fly leaves. Also covered in the two-week session will be design techniques. Students registering for this class should have completed the Introduction to Fine Binding or Fundamentals of Bookbinding course or must exhibit a basic knowledge of leather bookbinding by submitting several examples of their work.

Restoration of Cloth and Leather Bindings

May 17-21

Course Fee: $800

This course teaches techniques for the restoration and repair of cloth and leather bindings using Japanese paper and linen for rebacking and other repairs. Matching repairs to the bindings colors will be taught. Students should bring four books (two cloth and two leather, whose covers need to be repaired) to work on during class. No prerequisite is required for this class. This is a required class for the Conservation Diploma and can be taken at any time during the program. This class may be repeated as desired.

Rebacking of Leather Bindings

May 24-28

Course Fee: $800

This five-day course will cover the very common problems of repairing broken spines by rebacking and repairing the corners on leather bindings Students will repair at least two 18th or 19th century calf or goat skin bindings. Original spines will be repaired and remounted whenever possible. Leather paring will be practiced. New leather will be dyed and toned to match the old leather. Minimal blind and gold tooling will be demonstrated and practiced as time permits. Students should bring three or four 18th or 19th century leather books that need rebacking. No previous bookbinding experience is required. This course is required to obtain the AAB conservation diploma but is open to other students.

Finishing I

May 31-June 4

Course Fee: $800

This is part one of a two-part finishing class series delivered in two five-day sections. This format will be advantageous for students unable to attend the traditional two-week class. During this first five-day class students will prepare plaquettes, prepare patterns for spine lettering using hand tools, practice lettering with handle letters and type holders in blind, practice lettering using gold foil and gold leaf, and learn how to use a stamping machine. Students may also bring books that need titling. Conservation Diploma students should bring the five books they have previously sewn and forwarded.  Students in the conservation diploma program need to complete both Finishing I and Finishing II.
