A surreal view, shot shortly before sunset, of Ajax Mountain and the San Miguel River. “Beyond the content of anything the senses perceive there is a never-ending presence. When it is felt, the conscious mind does not function. …My intent is to try to communicate this unknowable, silent, mysterious presence through these large photographs.” Sponsored by Josephine & Erik Fallenius.

Katy Parnello

Judy Kohin
“Liftoff”, 36″ x 36″, Mixed media encaustic.

Judy Kohin has been working in mixed media encaustic since 2006. This piece is a continuation of her series “Up,” which she started in 2014. These paintings are created from silkscreen prints on cotton over laid with encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel and other media. Although the printmaking and encaustic processes are rather technical, time consuming and complicated, she finds the work meditative and engrossing. She loves the surprise and unpredictability of print making, and the luminosity and depth of encaustic. The title of this series, “Up,” is a reflection of the joy and gratification she has felt while making the work. “Art making is one of the most uplifting things I do. I love it and I hope these paintings convey that.” Her most recent solo exhibition was at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art in 2016. Sponsored by Joanna & Stuart Brown.
