Julia Buckwalter
Animal Skull Abstracts

March 1 - 2 | two days
Thursday - Friday | 6 - 8pm

Tuition: $75
Materials: $20

Antlers and skulls are a part of the wilderness in this area. We will be using them as our muse towards paintings that balance a grotesque object painted beautifully to draw the viewer in.  Georgia O’Keeffe exemplified this theory with her abstract paintings, and you’ll be learning from local artist Julia Buckwalter, who studied at the Ghost Ranch, where O’Keeffe spent years.

The focus of this oil painting class is light and its characteristics of direction, strength and color. A consideration of these characteristics is essential to the successful interpretation of the subject. Working from a model, students will examine the character of natural and artificial light sources. The weak and cool light source offered by the Depot windows is very different from direct sunlight with its strength and warm color. Students will learn to recognize and interpret the qualities of these very different lighting conditions. Students will paint portraits, nude and costumed subjects illuminated by both warm and cool light sources. Be prepared to work hard and have fun! Acrylics welcome.

Robert’s distinctive style touches each subject.  Robert believes that in painting, like poetry, real beauty lies in simplicity; stripping a statement down to its simplest form to make the most impact. His paintings are exhibited in finer galleries throughout the United States, and for over a decade has taught drawing and painting in the classical tradition at the Scottsdale Artists’ School.

Plein Air Landscape Painting

VISITING ARTIST

June 25 - 28 |  four days
Monday - Thursday

Tuition: $450

This workshop will teach students to add light and life into their landscapes by emphasizing how to get correct tone and color, giving clout to the composition and making color-mixing fun. This workshop will help the student to ‘loosen-up’ outdoors and see the big picture instead of the little detail. There will be plenty of demos and personal attention. This is a great class for students of all levels. Artists will need their own plein air easel and equipment.
