BUILDING NARRATIVE IN MIXED MEDIA – Laura Brainard Raborn

BUILDING NARRATIVE IN MIXED MEDIA

LAURA BRAINARD RABORN

Tuesday – Thursday  |  1:00 – 6:00pm   |  $395
March 6 – 8, 2018

This three-day workshop will explore a variety of mixed media materials and methods. Through demos, students will explore drawing, painting, collage, stenciling, stamping, and image transferring techniques. One of the most rewarding lessons will be how to embrace imperfection or the idea of “accident” in our artwork.

Students are encouraged to bring materials that inspire them visually – fabric swatches, magazine pages, newspaper clippings, receipts, tickets, maps, old drawings, photocopies of favorite photos, and even copies of pages from favorite books. From this collection of things, a pattern may emerge, or perhaps a visual images story. We will explore how meaning changes as you shift and play with colors, contrast, language, scale, textures and imagery.

The format of each day includes demos, work time, and critiques, during which we’ll analyze successful and unsuccessful pieces, and how to revive “mistakes.” We will also study contemporary artists whose materials and methods mimic what is covered in this workshop.

All levels of art experience are welcome – though some painting and drawing experience is helpful. Students who are ready to try new techniques will gain the most from this energetic class.
