CANCELLED: MIXED MEDIA METHODS: Collage Combinations – Laura Brainard Raborn

MIXED MEDIA METHODS: Collage Combinations

Wednesday – Friday  |  1:00 – 6:00pm  |  $400
February 27 – March 1, 2019

Collage can be a subtle insertion within layers of paint or it can be a dominant image that serves as a focal point. Students in this class will learn how to create refined, provocative works by using various materials (such as photocopied photos) and methods (such as image transfer).

Combine collage pieces with painting and drawing techniques to create multi-layered compositions. Play with surface texture, insert a subtle message, establish a pattern, express an opinion, cut up and reuse old artwork, and create abstractions using personal photos, photocopies, receipts, tickets, maps, newspaper articles, magazine images, and printed text. Students will explore how content and meaning can shift in relation to changes in color, scale, texture and imagery.

Laura Brainard Raborn’s paintings have been exhibited throughout Arkansas and are in numerous collections including recent acquisitions by the CARTI Collection, the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Bill and Hillary Clinton private collection. Her work has earned numerous awards such as the Wilma and Jack Diner Purchase Award at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She has a thriving portrait commission business, one of which was presented to the former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Beebe.

After receiving a B.A. from Rollins College, Laura worked in marketing for six years and took evening classes at the Arkansas Arts Center, where she is delighted to now teach workshops. She recently completed her Masters in Art with a focus on Painting, during which she worked as a Graduate Assistant for the esteemed Dr. Floyd Martin. Her studio is open for appointments and her paintings can be viewed at www.lauraraborn.wordpress.com or by visiting Justus Fine Art in Hot Springs, AR and Princess Street Gallery on Harbour Island in the Bahamas.

This is a Visiting Artist class, therefore cancellations must be made at least 45 days in advance in order to qualify for a refund (less a $25 administrative fee).
