Painting & Drawing

Plein air painting is quickly becoming a favorite past time of professional and amateur artists alike. As, Plein Air Magazine publisher Eric Rhodes likes to point out, “Plein Air Painting is the new golf.”  Like golf, mastering painting outdoors can be daunting. Suzie Baker’s humorous and informative manner makes tackling this multi-faceted challenge a fun and rewarding experience.

The workshop will kick off with a lecture and demo. Students will receive instruction on principles of painting ranging from drawing, color, value, composition, color theory and more. Each day, the class will head outside to paint in the field for the entire day, seeing, recording and observing nature as it changes. Suzie will provide on-location demos and offer one-on-one instruction. The goal is to identify each student’s level and provide strategies to progress through group instruction, example and individual interaction.

In case of inclement weather, the Ah Haa’s gallery classroom will remain available for the duration of the class. Students should come with the items specified on the materials list and be prepared to paint outside and be on their feet for long periods. Dress in layers, bring rain gear, and plan to eat lunch in the field.

Note: Suzie Baker will also host a one-day Portrait Painting Demonstration on July 5 from 6-9 pm.

Lodging packages are not available and Ah Haa cannot assist with lodging for this class. If you are coming from out of town, lodging may be difficult to find during the holiday. If you have trouble finding something in Telluride, you might try the Angler Inn in Placerville or the BackCountry Inn in Norwood.

This is a Visiting Artist class, therefore cancellations must be made at least 45 days in advance in order to qualify for a refund (less a $25 administrative fee).
