fall courses overview
Intermediate/Advanced Fine Leather Binding
September 13-24
Instructor: Don Glaister
Course Fee: $1500
Students will complete two full-leather bindings in this class. A range of fine binding techniques will be learned including laced-in boards, French style embroidery end-bands, leather hinges, end papers, sunken suede leather doublures and decorated paper or leather fly leaves. Also covered in the two-week session will be design techniques. Students registering for this class should have completed the Introduction to Fine Binding or Fundamentals of Bookbinding course or must exhibit a basic knowledge of leather bookbinding by submitting several examples of their work.
Pigment on Paper
September 27-October 1
Instructor: Suzanne Moore
Course Fee: $800
This intensive session will provide hands-on experience in select techniques and design of paper decoration. Participants will explore the range of possibilities of surface design on paper, using stenciling, acrylic paint and paste variations and with tinting and sealing papers, to create rich and distinct papers. Essential for bookbinders looking to create unique or editioned custom sheets, this week-long class also offers a unique opportunity for all artists interested in creating imagery for book pages and other two-dimensional work on paper. Students are asked to arrive at class with a project concept on which they will focus.
Separate Board Structure or Simplified Binding
October 4-8
Instructor Monique Lallier
Course Fee: $800
Monique prefers to call this technique ‘separate board structure’ because it is not a ‘simple’ structure; it is a precise technique. It is less demanding than a laced-in binding but not simple at all for beginners. The beauty of this technique is that the spine can be in leather and the boards covered with decorative papers, cloth or leather. If the boards are covered in leather, the design is worked on the boards prior to attaching them to the book. The spine is titled before hand as well.
In this class students will make a leather spine and the boards will be covered with decorative papers. This technique is better suited for thin books that are four-five sections and not more than eight including the end paper sections. No prior book making experience is required.
