Oil Painting

For the Love of It: Earth, Painting, Life

This is what my work is about.

Our wild and natural places are remarkable and vital – finite and endangered.
Life without such places is unimaginable to me.

Being in these mountains, near the water or in the desert canyons grounds me. The insignificance of what seems so important in everyday life is obvious when in a natural place largely untouched by humans. I like that.

The breathtaking beauty of the vast spaces (or recesses) are a gift to experience and my painting is an attempt to capture and share these gifts. The process of using all of my senses, including emotions, is as much part of the painting as trying out different compositions, the process of mixing colors and applying paint to board.

Experiencing these things gives me great joy.

Ann Dettmer

Works in Oil, Graphite, Mixed Media, and Small Artist’s Books

“I guess the most important thing for me is to find the work intriguing and alive.  Iʼm looking for passion and spirit painted with ʻskillful honestyʼ, for expression so real it almost falls off the edge – reality more than realism.  Life is messy: it has depth and layers, balance, intirgue.  Light and dark.  Confusion and clarity.  I donʼt see much difference between life and art.  My work helps to remind me of the interrelatedness of all things and to be open to the vastness of possibility.  Iʼm always learning.  The gratitude I feel is deep.”

Highly respected by peers and savvy collectors nationwide, Dettmer lives and works in the mountains of southwest Colorado.  Her far reaching interests are demonstrated by a broad range of subject matter.  All of the work, however, maintains the strength, underlying mystery and unique vision which are her signature.  She has been the subject of numerous articles and recipient of many awards.  Her work is also featured in Ann Templetonʼs book Color and Beyond.
