Daniel Tucker Gallery | Opening reception during ArtWalk on Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 5pm – 8:00pm
Goedele Vanhille was introduced to clay as a 10-year-old, studied ceramics in art school, has thrown pots and smashed pots, has built intimate pieces and monumental work, has studied and worked with numerous ceramic artists, has made pots in Crete, has built her own studio, has raw-glazed pots, has subjected pieces to multiple firings, has taught throwing classes and hand building classes, has worked with porcelain, built kilns, fired wood kilns, electric and gas ones too, has salt glazed pots, slip-trailed pots, glazed pots, has bought pots and sold her own clay work, and still feels the same joy and excitement working with clay as when she first touched the material.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is inspired by wonderment in the natural work and by the duality between nature and man-made. My pieces are sometimes anthropomorphic, sometimes whimsical, sometimes poetic.
I return to functional thrown work seasonally, which roots me back to the beginning and fosters intimacy with material and process. This, I hope, distills into work that appears effortless, where form, texture and essence come together.
I am intrigued by the idea of containing, but being willing to give, of winking at functionality, of hovering between pot and sculpture.
I consider my work successful when it makes the viewer wonder, ponder and smile.
