The Apron • Archival Inkjet Prints
East Gallery • Opening reception during ArtWalk on Friday, January 2 from 5-8pm.
Artist Statement: The Apron explores the present day culture of horse racing in the United States. Historically the sport and spectacle of horse racing is associated with pageantry and high society, yet its present day reality is manifested in a world of grit, banality, and labor. This series of photographs captures three distinct worlds that operate within the realm of horse racing: that of the handlers, who take care, train, and breed the horses; the gamblers, both on and off the track; and the spectators, who have a monetary stake in the race. By examining the unexposed spaces of this largely unknown entity, The Apron elucidates the underlying structure and every day experience behind this classic American pastime.
