This workshop will introduce the novice jewelry maker to many hand fabrication skills, while making and texturizing their own ring. This class will introduce students to creating organic textures on jewelry pieces with hammers and hand tools, in addition to sawing, hammers, forming, filing, soldering and finishing. With practice these skills can be used in making bangle bracelets, bezels for gems, and more. Some students may have enough time to make a bezel and add a semi-precious cabochon stone to their ring. Proper tool handling and green studio practices will be emphasized. Bring your manual dexterity, reading glasses (if needed), notebook and pen. All materials and tools provided. Attending this class will enable you to sign up for studio time in the Ah Haa Jewelry Studio.
Beginning Welding with Jon Hubbard

Deep Creek Welding Studio
$250 l $80 material fee
Spend two days at the Deep Creek Welding Studio, down valley from Telluride, and learn the basics of welding, from MIG welding and heating with oxy acetylene to hammering techniques and basic hand forging skills. The class will also explore working with cold steel – bending, forming, and riveting. Participants will create a small piece of furniture or a sculpture – functional or nonfunctional. Note: Because this class is limited to just three students, it fills quickly.
Intro to Wax Carving & Small Scale Casting Techniques - Pendant with Jennifer Dewey

Ah Haa Jewelry Studio
On Saturday, students will be introduced to the tools and basics of laying out a simple pendant design upon wax. Wax carving, joining and build-up techniques will be demonstrated and students will be assisted with creating their own pendants in wax. At the end of the day we will “tree up” all finished wax models and pour the investment. Throughout the weekend - Jennifer will demonstrate primitive casting techniques (cuttlefish, sand and/or sling casting), while students are working on their individual pieces.
Burnout of the flasks and waxes will begin early Sunday morning, so that we’re ready to centrifugally cast by 1pm on Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon, after the “burning-out” of the flasks overnight, students will observe the centrifugal casting of their designs with molten metal. Hand finishing and flex shaft techniques will be employed in the completion of their castings. Each student will leave this workshop with a wearable pendant of their creation.
Designs will be provided by the instructor, or students may bring a simple sketch or picture of a design they would like to use as inspiration for their pendants (maximum pendant size 1.5” width x 1.5” height x .25” depth). All materials and tools will be provided, or feel free to bring any hand carving tools you would like to try using.
