Barbara Gilhooly was Ah Haa’s NYE Gala artist.
I work on wood because I’m interested in the surface and layers of a painting. I was trained as a printmaker, with a strong background in drawing. Line is an important element for me. I like to carve into the wood surface and also work additively and subtract or reveal previous layers below by sanding or scrubbing the surface. I start with layers of paint on birch panels and build a rich active surface before a composition evolves. I work intuitively as I apply paint with brushes and cards; or as I remove layers with sand paper, Windex, or carving.
My compositions are intuitive and evolve from the act of doing, not planning. It has been only in the last 10 years that I moved into working without first planning. It’s not to say I have no thought about what I’m creating. It’s a more trusting place of being ready
to plunge into the work without fear. It isn’t always pleasant, and many days of work get painted over. But, I find comfort in knowing the work underneath is still necessary and vital to the finished piece. It’s like so much of life, what we don’t see or notice still
matters, everyone has layers that aren’t visible and it’s the depth of these layers that I find most interesting.

“Let’s be transparent, and we’ll bleed into the unknown…” ~ Thieving Irons
Painting/Drawing Installation by: Danielle DeRoberts
We are never alone although sometimes we feel lost…
The universe and reality we create are constantly tipping us on what to do throughout our life path- we all have an internal compass, yet we can easily dismiss it. Sometimes we might hear an internal voice guiding us through a life changing event or even the most mundane of tasks. People have referred to this as a “gut instinct”, while others refer to it as intuition. This collection of paintings by Danielle celebrates trusting our internal (soul) voice while honoring our ancestral connections to loved ones no longer present in this version of reality. Existing in this physical reality does not account for the infinite universe.
Loved ones who have passed can and do exist as long as we allow them to- whether it be in thought, prayer, conversation, or daydreams. Every one of us has experienced some energetic transmission with someone who has passed. Many of us dismiss it as wild imagination, grasping at a memory too wild to share with others maybe for fear of seeming…different. Or we are fearful that we cannot explain these experiences through science or religion. It’s possible the fear of our own mortality holds us back. But these experiences happen every single moment whether we look for them or run from them. Danielle’s paintings explore the process of honoring that energetic transmission and the connection between the physical and non-physical world through loved ones.
These paintings were created by dreaming with intent and a need to honor this energetic connection. Each of us has this ability to connect in the same way we connect with each other. After all, we are all here to dream together. ~ Nate Martinez
Originally from New York, Danielle DeRoberts is a painter and fashion designer currently residing in Telluride, CO. Before her recent relocation, Danielle lived in San Francisco, CA where she painted and designed for her indie clothing label, onerary. Danielle’s unique technique of sewing directly into her paintings creates textured pieces that spring to life, transforming the two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional installations. Through her art, Danielle desires to create a space where the audience feels welcome and comfortable. Her paintings are vessels for her to communicate and she hopes her own creative expression will inspire the viewer to connect with their own soul voice.
Danielle works as a full time artist at the Stronghouse Studios, Telluride CO
